AstraZeneca has announced a £1.2bn purchase of its Nexium (esomeprazole) unit in the United States.

The acquisition will enable AstraZeneca to expand the portfolio of Nexium and reduce costs for consumers who rely on it.

The acquisition is the result of the UK’s first Nexium-based product, which has a similar formulation to Prilosec, with a more targeted approach, according to a press release issued on behalf of AstraZeneca.

“The acquisition will enable AstraZeneca to focus on developing a targeted portfolio of innovative and trusted treatments for gastroesophageal reflux disease and ulcers and other conditions,” the company said.

Nexium is the first of a new class of drugs called proton pump inhibitors. It works by reducing acid production in the stomach. This medicine is used to treat frequent heartburn and acid reflux.

AstraZeneca currently markets the brand-name product, Nexium, under the brand name Prilosec, and the generic product, Prilosec-R, under the generic name esomeprazole.

Nexium, which is made by AstraZeneca, was launched in the United States on 27 September 2018 following a successful launch of the product in the first quarter of 2019.

The United States Food & Drug Administration (FDA) approved the drug in June 2019 to treat conditions such as reflux esophagitis, and the condition is a serious and sometimes debilitating condition that requires medical treatment.

Esomeprazole, which belongs to the class of proton pump inhibitors, is used to treat gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), which causes excessive stomach acid over the counter.

Esomeprazole has been available in the United States since its launch in the US on 27 September 2018, but it has been removed from the market due to safety concerns.

At least 12 states are looking into the possibility of offering a generic version of the heartburn medication Nexium to help reduce stomach acid. In the past six years, a few states are considering allowing people to buy generic versions of Nexium.

The results of the three-year study — published online July 28 in the New England Journal of Medicine — have been mixed. The findings suggest that people can take less expensive versions and possibly lose the benefit of a generic equivalent.

"We've been very encouraging in our opinion that there's a possibility that people who are already taking generic versions of Nexium could switch from one of these drugs to another," said Dr. William Shrum, a urology specialist at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston. "While we don't know whether it's a problem, it's very possible."

The study was funded by the Brigham and Women's Hospital, which is in Boston. It also was sponsored by Pfizer, which makes the drug. The results were published in the December issue of the Journal of the American Urological Association.

A spokeswoman for the company said that the results are preliminary and not intended to replace pharmacists or doctors' professional opinion. "We don't believe that patients should be taking any medication in the absence of a physician's recommendation," she added. "Any recommendation to the physician is based on the patient's specific health condition and the patient's preference."

The study was sponsored by the Brigham and Women's Hospital Medical Center, the only other Boston hospital in the study.

The medication is currently under clinical review for use in children, adolescents and adults. It has not been approved by the U. S. Food and Drug Administration for use in children.

"There is no substantial evidence that this medication is safe and effective in this population," said Dr. Steven Nissen, director of the Massachusetts Heart Letter. "There are very limited clinical data on its use in children and adolescents and this medication is not approved for use in children and adolescents."

Nexium is available by prescription only. Patients must be 18 and older.

Nexium is available without a prescription and by prescription only. Patients must be 18 and older, and their health condition must be listed on their health records.

Nexium can be taken with or without food. Patients should be on a low-calorie diet and should not drink alcohol.

"It's very important to get the full benefit of the drug," said Dr. "The drug has to be taken properly under the supervision of a physician. We believe that it's a safe and effective treatment."

Nissen said he has seen patients taking the medication for gastrointestinal conditions who have used the drug for more than four weeks, but have not used it regularly.

He said that taking the medication for a year or longer without a prescription may be possible. The medication should not be used in patients who are pregnant, breastfeeding or have liver disease.

"We don't know if the medication will be effective in patients who are pregnant, or they'll get pregnant and take the medication for another reason," he added.

Nissen said that while the medication is not FDA-approved for the treatment of ulcers and gastrointestinal bleeding, he said it would be a good treatment for patients with stomach ulcers and other ulcers, such as those caused by a certain heartburn or acid reflux.

"We want to help patients get their life back on track," he said. "We don't recommend any medication over Nexium for patients with stomach ulcers and other stomach problems, unless there are other alternatives that have the potential to be helpful."

Nissen said the results suggest that people who are taking the drug for heartburn should be careful not to take the medication with other drugs, such as antacids or NSAIDs. "If it's a problem for the patient, the pharmacist may suggest switching to an antacid," he added.

Dr. James O'Brien, a urologist at Boston University School of Medicine, said that while the study did have some limitations, he did not recommend it for people who are already taking the medication for heartburn or acid reflux. He said he would not recommend it for anyone else.

Sidney Taub, a urologist at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, said he was not concerned about the potential side effects of taking Nexium.

"Nexium is safe and effective in many patients and this is a very small number of patients.
